What Are the Critical Capabilities of an Enterprise Video Platform?

If you spend any time in the Enterprise Video space, you are likely aware of the Magic Quadrant (MQ) for Enterprise Video Content Management (EVCM), an annual report issued by Gartner that places EV vendors into one of four quadrants—Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries and Niche Players—based on measures that include market, customer and product-related criteria. However, not everyone knows there is a companion report to the MQ—the Gartner Critical Capabilities Report—which drills further into the data and analysis behind the placement of vendors within the Magic Quadrant.

Today we’re going to take a deeper dive into this extremely valuable Gartner report—by reviewing some of the key criteria used to evaluate and rank enterprise video vendors. Of the 11 capabilities Gartner has identified in their report, this article will focus on five: 1) Delivery of Video; 2) Capture, Creation and Modification; 3) Cloud Model, 4) On Premise and Hybrid Model, and 5) Security. What is the Critical Capabilities Report and Why is it So Valuable?

Gartner’s Critical Capabilities report assesses and scores the Enterprise Video platforms of 13 vendors across 11 critical capabilities, as they relate to the four most common uses of video within the Enterprise—Internal Executive Messaging, Internal Training, Internal Collaboration and External Video for Sales and Marketing.

The 28-page report includes full written reviews of each vendor, key findings on the EVCM industry, capabilities weighting by use case, final scores for all relevant vendors across the four use cases noted above, mandatory inclusion criteria, and a complete synopsis of the research methodology. This comprehensive look at the EV landscape gives organizations a valuable tool to zero in on their primary use cases and the capabilities most relevant to their unique needs when developing a short-list of potential vendors based on fit. The five Critical Capabilities we will focus on in this article are presented below.

Focal Point #1: Delivery of Video

Video has become one of the most personal and engaging ways for executives and team leaders to connect with globally distributed teams—which is why Delivery is assigned a weighting of one quarter of the overall Internal Executive Messaging score in the Critical Capabilities report. Due to its significant impact on overall user experience and engagement, flawless video delivery is vital for streaming live and on demand corporate video globally to any device—securely, and with no buffering or loss of video quality.

Our Take: The definition of “executive messaging” is expanding as leaders of all levels within the enterprise embrace live video broadcasting as their go-to, self-service method of communicating with their teams to improve collaboration, transparency and speed. That trend is driving the need for intelligent Enterprise Video platforms that dynamically select the best video delivery method—caching, multicast, unicast, peer-to-peer, VDI or external CDN—optimizing the viewing experience for each location, end-user and endpoint device.

Focal Point #2: Capture, Creation and Modification

The Gartner Critical Capabilities report underscores the importance of end user control and usability by allotting significant weighting for the video Capture, Creation and Modification capability across three of the four use cases: Internal Training, Internal Collaboration and Executive Messaging. The report cites actions like ingesting video from multiple sources, editing, adding content and captioning as important functions Enterprise Video platforms should offer.

Our Take: There is a major movement underway in the enterprise called “self-service video”—a strategy that empowers users to create their own video content and conduct live events. Self-service video makes sophisticated functions easy for anyone, including shot resizing, image overlays, narration replacement, pre and post-roll creation, multi-clipping and polling. And behind the scenes, intelligent ingest (or capture) automates encoding and transcoding of video streams, indexes video for search, processes images and slides, creates thumbnails, and routes video assets to portals and management systems based on customizable distribution rules.

Focal Point #3: Cloud/SaaS Deployment Model

Given the rapid evolution of video as a primary means of communication, large organizations are challenged with choosing the right deployment model for their growing number of use cases. As you might expect, Gartner gives the Cloud/SaaS model a strong weighting in both the External Video for Sales use case and the Internal Training use case.

Our Take: Organizations looking for a lower-cost, less resource-intensive platform often choose a Cloud or hosted solution. A Cloud enterprise video implementation provides a full set of pay-as-you-go tools for video creation, distribution and management—hosted entirely outside your company’s network and firewall. Once user permissions are set up, companies can simply turn on a Cloud deployment and go. However, growing organizations should ensure that the solution is scalable with options for advancing your deployment model in the future.

Focal Point #4: On Premise and Hybrid Deployment Model

In the Critical Capabilities report, the On Premise/Hybrid model is weighted heavily for the Executive Messaging use case where scalability, reliability and security are paramount. It also receives a relatively high weighting in both the Internal Training and Internal Collaboration use cases.

Our Take: Large organizations, especially those in security-conscious and regulated industries, choose on premise deployment because they need sophisticated security and granular control while leveraging and optimizing their internal network and even third party CDNs. In addition, on premise solutions also provide the scalability and extensibility they need as video permeates their massive, and complex computing environments. Increasingly, however, these organizations are embracing hybrid deployments because it gives them the best of both worlds—an intelligent, privatized network with the flexibility of cloud computing.

Focal Point #5: Security

As expected, Security is identified by Gartner as a relevant capability in three of the four use cases: Internal Executive Messaging, Internal Training and Internal Collaboration. And as video becomes easier to produce and share, video security will only become more important, especially in verticals like Banking, Financial Services, Health Care, Life Sciences, Professional Services, Technology and Telecommunications

Our Take: Security requires holistic thinking as you approach your video network design because it spans hosting, storage of content, delivery, access control and regular auditing. Make sure your enterprise video platform works seamlessly with your internal methods of authentication and authorization, or that it offers built-in security. And don’t forget the expertise factor—the vendor should have deep experience at working in the enterprise.


Evaluating Enterprise Video platforms is a complex undertaking with many factors to consider.  And anyone involved in the strategic planning, network design, research and decision-making effort will find Gartner’s Critical Capabilities report valuable with its comprehensive analysis of vital enterprise video capabilities against four major use cases.
