Remote Dreams Are No Longer Remote

There is no question that it’s a new day for many when it comes to the reality of those dreams you never thought possible.  What dreams am I talking about?  Well, the dream of living where you have always wanted while still having the job you love.  There was a time that we all believed this would only happen when we retired because that remote location, that farm, that small town was not aligned with the location of the job you wanted or needed.  It’s a new day and one of the benefits of the pandemic was the acceptance and acceleration of companies adopting remote work.  I am one of the many that have benefitted from this moving out of a big city into a rural ranch area.  Something I never thought possible until much later in life.  I have to thank my employer, Qumu, for being an early adopter in going fully remote affording all employees this dream.

Remote Communications Structure

Of course, it is not just about going remote and nothing else.  All of the pieces need to be in place so that this is not only a successful structure for the company, but also for  the employee.  One of those critical pieces that needs to be in place is a video solution.  Remote does not mean disconnected—it actually means more connected than ever so that I can still do my job, build relationships, deliver innovation, drive customer engagement and satisfaction, and feel that I am informed and part of a team.  Communication leads to transparency and trust and what better way than to do that via a Video On Demand or a live broadcast.

What I love most about being remote is that my skills in communicating clearly and consistently have grown exponentially. I am very deliberate about ensuring I am doing this all of the time.  I am intentional about staying connected with others rather than just the casual bump in the hallway. Video allows me to upskill as well as connect across boundaries in a way that was not always done before.  If you were in a different region, I probably never spoke with you or even knew who you were.  Now teams are comprised of folks from all over the world.  It truly has opened the door to richer and more diverse learning, relationships, and connections.  This new approach has also allowed the organization to have information flow in all directions allowing for employees to feel that they are brought along on what is happening immediately and ahead of social media.

Video has been the catalyst to making remote work a reality not just for now, but forever.  We can now sit by that window overlooking that landscape you never thought possible.  There is nothing more engaging and satisfying to an employee than to achieve their dream job in their dream location.  Here’s to the new way of work!
