How to Manage a Winning Sports League Communication Program

Small sports leagues often rely almost solely on in-person engagement and word-of-mouth updates. Video on Demand (VOD) provides an efficient way to train and inform staff or volunteers and expand audience size.

Outside of London, England, The Birmingham County Football Association (BCFA) has seen first-hand how leveraging VOD increases community engagement exponentially. BCFA’s first point of contact with the volunteers, players, coaches, and referees used to be difficult at best, but thanks to using the Qumu Video Engagement Platform, they’re reaching thousands and have successfully carried on despite the pandemic.

Pandemic or not, using video to expand and educate your audience is an invaluable tool that’s positively impacting BCFA. For viewers who want an exclusive experience, users can scan a QR code and access exclusive content or subscribe to the association for ongoing updates. Using video has also increased BCFA’s reach to widely distributed geographically disparate audiences or speak different languages thanks to automatic captioning in multiple languages. An enterprise-level video solution should provide automated transcripts, translations, captioning, and more.

According to BCFA CEO Kevin Shoemake, the capability to easily create, distribute and manage video content quickly and efficiently, with advanced security and scale, was critical when choosing a video vendor. BCFA has complete control over its videos’ consumption and can easily track when videos are viewed, for how long, and on what devices. These insights help drive future content decisions.

“Our video-on-demand library has been so successful, we are going to develop a livestream program as well broadcast some of our games,” said Emily Peacock, BCFA media and content officer.

“With Qumu’s Video Engagement Platform, we can easily produce, share and manage new content, bring members to BCFA, and easily expand our engagement reach to provide succinct on-demand support,” added Shoemake.

BCFA can now holistically and consistently create and distribute asynchronous video through Qumu’s secure platform. As BCFA develops new video resources for everyone, from kids just starting on their football journeys to tenured professionals, Qumu works alongside BCFA and their 4,780 teams. Thanks to video, engagement, community subscription, and participation have increased at BCFA.
